Fighting Back Against Arthritis

According to research, about 91 million adults in the US suffer from some form of arthritis. These numbers are alarming, and though science is doing its best to make life easier for us, we must fight back against diseases like arthritis.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a condition that affects the joints and causes pain, stiffness, and swelling. There are over a hundred types of arthritis, and each has its own treatment plan. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are the two most common types of arthritis found globally. Although most commonly seen in adults over 65, arthritis also affects children and young adults.

How can you fight back?

Suffering through arthritis is tough, but things in your everyday life can contribute to making arthritis more manageable for you.

1.    Don’t Skip On Your Medication

Forgetting or skipping your arthritis medication just won’t do. Forgetting to take your medication now and then is understandable, but if it’s becoming a common issue, you can put on an alarm on your phone or put your pill sorter in a place you’re bound to see it.

2.    Healthy Diet

The right kind of diet is essential. Certain foods help alleviate arthritis symptoms, and certain others increase inflammation— research what foods you should be eating and what you should be avoiding. You can also consult a nutritionist to help you make dietary changes.

3.    Exercise

Physical exercise strengthens achy muscles and joints, boosts energy, helps you with weight loss, and improves sleep. You don’t have to find something super intensive; consult your doctor and find a low-impact exercise that works for you.

4.    Sleep Well

Although sleep problems are common with arthritis, they’re not inevitable. Improve your sleep by getting a sleep evaluation done. Find the right sleep gear or treatment that allows you to get your rest.

5.    Protect Your Joints

The way we move impacts our joints and can cause an injury if someone has arthritis. Protect your joints by maintaining a proper posture, losing weight, and opting for assistive devices if need be.

6.    Manage Your Stress

There is a connection between stress and arthritis. Stress can flare up your joints, causing a lot of pain, so manage your stress and try to minimize it

7.    Ask For Help

Arthritis makes daily activities difficult and limits your everyday life. If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to ask your friends and family members for help.
